Two police officers were killed and others injured at
the Divisional Police Station in Potiskum, Potiskum local government
area in Yobe state after a Volkswagen golf car filled with bombs went
off at the station.
In a related development, two explosions went off in a crowded mobile phone market in the city today.
Daily Trust reports that the car was earlier intercepted by the
policemen. The police station is said to be close to the palace of the
Emir of Fika.
“It was while they were at the gates of the police station undergoing security checks that the car exploded,” an officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity told AFP news agency.
Another police officer, who also spoke on condition of anonymity told Punch, “A saloon Golf car, laden with explosive devices was seized and driven to the Police station for investigation and when the car was being parked within the premises of the station, the blast went off around 3.15 killing two people on the spot.”
He disclosed that one of the deceased was a police inspector, serving in the command while the other was a resident.
A resident of the town, who equally craved anonymity, confirmed what the policeman said.
He explained that a suspected bomber was arrested in a saloon Golf car around the Potiskum main market and was taken to the Divisional Police station located in the heart of Potiskum town.
“A loud bang was later heard within the premises of the police station,” the source said.
Commissioner of Police in Yobe state, Marcus Danladi confirmed the incident. He told Daily Trust that the policemen died on the spot.
He disclosed that the police acted on public complaint over the vehicle which was strangely parked at the market area without identifying the owner.
“Police put the vehicle under surveillance and the owner was later apprehended. They took him to the station where the bomb exploded while searching the vehicle,” he said.
Potiskum is the largest commercial town in Yobe State, located about 100km west of Damaturu, the state capital.“It was while they were at the gates of the police station undergoing security checks that the car exploded,” an officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity told AFP news agency.
